Three Ways To Start 'Greenifying' Your Home

There seems to be no way to escape it-- the green revolution is still in full swing! Now, more than ever, Americans are making more and more eco-conscious choices for their homes and for their lives. An incredible effort is being placed on the "three Rs" of conservation: reducing, reusing, and recycling.

It's an exciting concept, but where does one even start? "Greenifying" your home can seem like a daunting project, but, in reality, a few small tweaks can go a long way. Take a look at these three areas of your home to make some significant improvements:

1. Energy Conservation

From simply switching off your lights when not in use to swapping out your large appliances to newer, more efficient models, conserving energy can be as large of a project as you would like it to be. Perhaps even including some solar options would be an appealing part of your "greenifying" project. These measures not only save costs, but also ensure that the energy we are producing is going as far as it is able.

2. Recycling

According to the Duke University Center for Sustainability & Commerce, more than 55% of the 220 million tons of yearly waste end up in landfills. This is a staggering number! Ensuring that some sort of recycling service is in place can be an impactful initiative for the eco-minded. If your neighborhood or city currently doesn't offer some sort of curbside recycling program, taking action to get those ordinances in place is a great way to further sustainable practices in your immediate area.

3. Composting

What's not to like? Composting reduces, reuses and recycles. Establishing some sort of composting regimen for your household will not only eliminate waste, but will help immensely with your own food production efforts. According to the same Duke study mentioned above, approximately two-thirds of our household waste is able to be composted. To be honest, that's pretty cool.
